I am recently rocket L1 certified and HAM certified myself.. and have some related interests.
I've been asking around, and it seems that we have several Rocket+HAM guys in the group (including VT's own Dr. Shinpaugh). Here he is with a pic of his giant pyramid from an NRVR/VT/VAST launch last year:

Anyway.. both he and I are interested in putting a HAM based APRS/packet gear in some of our larger rockets for real time GPS tracking as well as telemetry data and connectivity (for various fun things).
Have you played much with APRS of X25/packet?
